Zuccardi - Concreto Paraje Altamira Malbec 2020

Zuccardi - Concreto Paraje Altamira Malbec 2020

Familia Zuccardi is a family-run winery based out of the Bodega Santa Julia in the Mendoza region of Argentina. The company boasts numerous brands, each with a wide range of wines, covering classic Argentinian varieties (the wines are often varietally labelled) as well as numerous styles including sweet and sparkling wines. Zuccardi produced the country’s first premium Tempranillo and also runs olive oil brand Zuelo. Additionally, Zuccardi is known for experimentation in the cellar, making wines with little-known varieties such as Aglianico, Bonarda, and Ekigaina. It also produces fortified wines under the Malamado brand

Due to the scarcity of water in the Mendoza region, Alberto Zuccardi, the winery’s founder, experimented with a new irrigation system and, wanting to prove its worth to his neighbours, he planted a vineyard in Maipu. Five years after that first plantation, Zuccardi broke ground on a winery in the same spot to vinify the grapes that his irrigation method had allowed him to grow. The experiment led to Zuccardi becoming one of the most prominent and prosperous wineries in Argentina.

Scion and exceptionally talented young Sebastián Zuccardi, 3rd generation winemaker, pioneered this Concreto malbec, grown at Finca Piedra Infinita in Uco's Paraje Altamira, at 1100m. The vines are rooted in the rocky calcareous soils, and the whole cluster grapes were native fermented and aged in concrete eggs (specially made, without epoxy), with the aim to show the purity of the grape on this special site. The altitude gifts immediate freshness, turning out wild plum, fragrant black cherry, smouldering tobacco, fresh violets, and crushed stones which course along a full, yet taut palate. The fine, firm, and lengthy tannins lead this to an amply salt studded finish. Such a beaut, and promise for a future Malbec purity in Argentia.
