Tantalus Vineyards - Old Vines Riesling 2023

Tantalus Vineyards - Old Vines Riesling 2023

Tantalus Vineyards was founded on the belief that exceptional wines made from a single vineyard of outstanding pedigree would capture the palates of those seeking authenticity and a sense of place.

They are situated on the eastern slopes of the Okanagan Valley, overlooking the shores of Lake Okanagan and the City of Kelowna. The site was first planted to table grapes in 1927 and today is known as one of the oldest continuously producing vineyards in British Columbia.

Tantalus Vineyards has as its focus Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, as they think these varietals are ideally suited to their vineyards. Their site is comprised of 75 acres of continuous land in Southeast Kelowna, of which 50 acres is under vine. There are 9 blocks on the property, each with its own distinct slope and aspect. Somewhat unusual for one site, these small undulations in the land make for great variation in grape flavours and intensity. Silt soils dominate and were deposited over gravels as a result of ancient glacial melt waters.

The vineyard is comprised of mature plantings of Riesling (1978) and Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier (1985) as well as recent plantings of Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay (2005– 2020). Tantalus Vineyards strive for balance in the vines rather than forcing outcomes. As a result, crop yields are naturally low to moderate, depending on the grape variety and clone type. The vineyard is farmed naturally and the vines are entirely hand-tended.
