Nichol Vineyard - The Village Syrah 2022

Nichol Vineyard - The Village Syrah 2022

Nichol Vineyard is among the first three pioneering wineries on the Naramata Bench. The first part of their home vineyard was planted in 1989 and completed in 1991. They currently farm and grow all of their wines within 900 meters of the winery. They continue to operate on a small scale and focus their attention and resources on the quality of their grapes and their subsequent élevage in the winery. Their focus is on wine-making, not sales or marketing.

In 2021 Nichol released The Village Syrah, with fruit from a neighbouring friend, and vineyard planted in 2010 on alluvial till and clay. This was basket pressed, and spent 18 months in neutral oak prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Super ferrous on first whiff, with iron scenting black raspberry, dark cherry, and dark earth. Tannins are softly grippy and fine, and acidity is moderate, taking this to a perfumed violet and peppercorn finish. A nice difference to their home site syrahs, based on granite, this darker, brooding, and perfumed one is ready to enjoy.
