Basilisco - Teodosio Aglianico del Vulture 2021

Since its start in the early 90s, the winery Basilisco has aimed for the highest quality both in its vineyards and wine making and has achieved great success in a short time. In 2011 Feudi di San Gregorio, the leading winery in the South of Italy, acquired Basilisco in order to gain access to some of the ancient tuff stone caves in the “Shesh”, the historic area of cellars in Barile. The purchase was directed by a belief in the promise of Basilisco‘s extraordinary vineyards, and the unique qualities of the cellars carved in the stone, which have a stable temperature of 16-18 °C degrees and are thus ideal for cellaring wine.

The majestic Vulture volcano had its last eruption 130,000 years ago. Laboring on the hill of the mountain, Basilisco has 20 hectares under vine, some of which are cultivated “a Capanno”, intermixed with with olive and fruit trees. The vineyards are in the best areas of Barile, at an elevation between 450 and 600 meters. Grapes are picked by hand, on different dates due to the various microclimates. The soil (volcanic tuff stone and flysch), in in combination with the daily temperature range in the vineyards, enriches their wines, resulting in a product with a notable fruit presence and unmistakable freshness and minerality.

All of the vineyards are worked using organic methods since the goal is to let the soil produce the best fruit possible with the least intrusion.
