Anselmo Mendes - Muros Antigos Vinho Verde 2023

Anselmo Mendes - Muros Antigos Vinho Verde 2023

Anselmo Mendes is a legendary winemaker, recognized not only for the excellence of the wines he produces but also for the surprising and consistent way he innovates. Combining the use of age-old techniques, such as fermentation on skins, with bold winemaking methods such as the fermentation of Alvarinho in oak casks, he is established in Portugal and abroad with an original design and his own identity.

Anselmo Mendes vineyards are certified as Sustainable Farming, proof that good agricultural practices run deep in their DNA. Viticulture at Anselmo Mendes takes the form of integrated production, involving the rational use of water, the improvement of the soil and non-use of herbicides. These practices are also combined with the recovery and planting of forests, the restoring of old grain mills to operation, and the presence of animals.

In the wine world, Mr. Mendes is known as “Mr. Alvarinho” because of the extensive and imaginative work that Anselmo Mendes has done with this grape. He was the first to age it in French oak barrels. But he also makes wines from Loureiro, Avesso, and Arinto. Most of his work focuses on white wines but he also makes very well-structured reds.

His Muros Antigos (“ancient walls”) line is a fascinating parallel exploration of all several terroirs and varieties in the Vinho Verde appellation from a relatively neutral and hands-off winemaking perspective. If Alvarinho is the most citric and bracing (as well as the most famous), Loureiro is slightly broader, more textural, and headily aromatic. Avesso, meanwhile, the least well-known (but best-regarded locally after the other two varieties) produces wines with the most heft and structure.
