Pfaffenheim - Pfaff Alsace Pinot Gris 2023
Located at the heart of the vineyard of Alsace since 1957, Cave des Vignerons de Pfaffenheim has developed a taste for quality and innovation in line with its traditions and values. Today, it has close to 200 growers, and is one of the major players in the region, producing around 3 million bottles a year–with every single grape harvested by hand.
Cave des Vignerons de Pfaffenheim is one of the leading producers in Alsace, and today is considered to one of the the best in the region. In 2017, for the second time in three years, Pfaff was distinguished in two of the most influential European wine competitions, winning the Best French Wine Trophy at the International Wine And Spirit Competition in London and being nominated Best National Producer at AWC Vienna.
Winemaking at this domaine is a mixture of traditional and modern approaches. As mentioned earlier, harvesting and sorting is one by hand, according to a picking schedule determined by plot, to ensure that the fruit has reached the peak of ripeness. Grapes are then placed in the press without prior crushing or destemming, to prevent oxidation. The white appellations are elaborated using traditional methods. Cave de Vignerons de Pfaffenheim is equipped with highly modern pneumatic presses. The wines are made in stainless steel vats, thereby ensuring controlled fermentation temperatures and the proper extraction of the characteristics of the fruit. A couple of months after fermentation, the wines that have been matured on fine lees, are racked, and then filtered and clarified. They are kept in entirely filled vats to avoid any type of oxidation. The Grands Crus are laid down in cellars carved out from the rock, thereby offering the best conditions in terms of temperature and relative humidity.
