López de Haro - Rioja Reserva 2019

López de Haro - Rioja Reserva 2019

Hacienda López de Haro sits squarely in the heart of the best of Rioja’s vineyard regions, San Vicente de la Sonsierra. In this region the best old Tempranillo vineyards in Rioja Alta can be found. The land is cultivated using the goblet vine training system on very poor soils, which greatly reduces yields and increases the quality of the bunches.

This location is characterized by a climate with mild temperatures throughout the year, with the surrounding mountains affording protection from the wind. This is an area with a variety of soils including alluvial, clay-calcareous and clay-ferrous. These conditions make it an ideal place for vine cultivation, especially Tempranillo. In addition to Tempranillo, López de Haro also works with other native varieties of La Rioja, such as Garnacha, Viura, Mazuelo, and Graciano.

López de Haro works with growers with whom it has relationships of long standing, cultivating old vines. Some, like Isaac Balda, have been working their vines for over 60 years. Others, much younger, like José Luis Pérez, have been working with López de Haro since its founding. There are still others, like Dani Fernández, who works in the cellar at López de Haro and also provides grapes from his vineyard in Laguardia. In short, López de Haro has a strong connection to the soil, which coupled with careful winemaking, results in wines of consistently high quality.
