Château Le Puy - Emilien Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux 2020

Château Le Puy - Emilien Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux 2020

Located at the top of the same clay and fossil-rich limestone plateau as Saint-Emilion, overlooking the districts of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, Chateau le Puy dominates the Dordogne Valley. At an altitude of 107m, it is the second highest geodesic point of the Gironde department. This position lent its name to the site as of Roman times; le Puy means a high place, a podium or mountain peak.

The propety has been farmed by the Amoreau family since 1610, spanning 15 generations of wine makers. As far back as the family can remember, life at Le Puy has revolved around making wine. It was always understood that the property had to be in harmony with its environment, which is why half the land is forest, meadows, and a pond. More recently, Le Puy has been planting shrubs between wine rows to support pollinators and boost biodiversity.

There has been a commitment of long standing to sustainability at this domaine: land is worked with horses to avoid compaction and there is no plowing, to make sure that the soils are not disturbed. Organic and biodynamic farming principles are followed: Le Puy has successively obtained Ecocert (organic agriculture) and Demeter (biodynamics) accreditation, the specifications brief to which Pascal Amoreau contributed.

Wine making is done through limited intervention. After manual harvesting and de-stemming, the grapes are stored in cement vats and begin to ferment, using exclusively native yeasts, and without the use of additives. Fermentation is allow to proceed naturally, and no attempt is made to control it. This procedure enables gentle diffusion and improved integration of the wine’s elements, in particular the tannins. It draws out le Puy’s characteristic texture, finesse and harmony.

Maturation takes place in used oak barrels and foudres for at least two years for our red wines. Every effort is made to avoid the influence of wood on the taste of the wines, which is considered a flaw. No wine additives are used, and all cleaning is done solely with steam using the estate spring water. Likewise, le Puy does not have an external oenological consultant; a family committee makes decisions independently. Le Puy has its own analysis laboratory, which enables them to follow the evolution of our wines and ensure their impeccable quality for the most discerning wine drinkers.
